Checking Worker Experience References Without Guesswork
Use candidate consent, role-specific questions and clear records to check employment references while recognising the limits of the evidence.

Reference checks can support recruitment, but they need a defined purpose. Employers hiring Bangladeshi workers should decide what they need to confirm and avoid treating any informal phone conversation as proof of every claimed skill.
Obtain appropriate permission
Explain the proposed reference check to the candidate and handle personal information under applicable requirements. Be especially careful about contacting a current employer without the candidate’s knowledge. Ask only for information relevant to the recruitment decision.
Check the source
Confirm the referee’s relationship to the worker and whether they can speak about the relevant period and duties. A colleague may provide useful context but may not be authorised to verify employment records. Record that distinction.
Ask focused questions
Discuss dates, role and responsibilities where the source can confirm them. For technical positions, ask about the tasks the referee directly observed. Avoid inviting unsupported judgements about nationality, personal circumstances or unrelated characteristics.
Record uncertainty
A company may no longer operate, a supervisor may be unavailable or a source may decline to comment. An unavailable reference does not automatically prove dishonesty. Use other relevant evidence and document the limits rather than inventing a conclusion.
Combine the evidence
Reference information should sit alongside interviews, document checks and any competent practical assessment. Rapidocs can discuss agreed screening steps with an employer, but no single reference replaces technical acceptance or local eligibility checks. A transparent record is more useful than a simple “verified” stamp with no explanation.
