Welder or Fabricator: Defining Separate Skills Before Hiring

Welder and fabricator are related titles, but they do not always describe the same work. A person may weld prepared components well yet have limited experience marking out or assembling from drawings. Employers recruiting Bangladeshi metalworkers should decide whether they need separate specialists or a combined role. Describe the workflow List who reads drawings, measures material, prepares parts, fits assemblies and completes welding. State which stages belong to the advertised vacancy. If the workshop uses a separate cutting team, do not assess every welder as though they must independently complete the full fabrication process. Check the evidence for each skill Ask candidates to describe a component they worked on and their personal contribution. Establish whether they interpreted dimensions themselves or followed prepared instructions. For combined roles, review fitting and welding separately so strength in one does not hide a gap in the other. Use a representative assessment Have a competent technical team choose the task, tools and acceptance criteria. A safe exercise might assess interpretation and assembly before an appropriate welding test. Avoid improvised tests involving machinery the candidate has not been authorised or trained to use. Explain the actual workplace Include products, materials, shifts, supervision and any site installation duties. “All-round fabricator” is less useful than a clear list of essential tasks. The same clarity should appear in the offer presented to the candidate.
