Keeping Overseas Recruits: Fixing Early Job Mismatches

Improve early retention by comparing actual duties, hours, support and benefits with what candidates were told during recruitment.

When a new worker leaves early, employers may immediately look for another candidate. It is also worth checking whether the job matched the offer. Recruitment can identify suitable people, but it cannot compensate for undisclosed duties or unresolved working arrangements. Compare the brief with the reality Review the advertised role, interview information and written terms. Did the worker arrive at the expected site? Are the main duties and schedule as described? If something changed, check whether it was explained and agreed appropriately. Listen without guessing Ask the worker what is difficult and separate training needs from practical concerns. A problem may involve transport, unclear instructions or uncertainty about reporting. Do not assume the cause from nationality, age or previous country of employment. Give supervisors a role A named supervisor should check progress and explain expectations. Where performance is below the required standard, identify specific tasks and the support needed. General labels such as “not suitable” make it harder to improve either recruitment or training. Review the employer’s side If several recruits report the same mismatch, update the brief and resolve the underlying issue before another intake. Replacement conditions in a recruitment agreement should not distract from the cause of repeated departures.
