Mason Recruitment: Separating Blockwork, Plastering and Finishing

Define the masonry work you need before recruiting. Blockwork, plastering and finishing experience should be assessed as separate practical capabilities.

“Mason required” can describe several different jobs. A worker experienced in blockwork may not be equally experienced in plastering, tiling or decorative finishing. Employers recruiting Bangladeshi masons should identify the main trade tasks before comparing CVs. Build the brief around the work List the materials, typical surfaces and finish expected. Explain whether candidates work from drawings, follow setting-out information or support a supervisor. If tile laying is a separate vacancy, keep it separate rather than quietly adding it to every mason’s responsibilities. Ask for relevant examples Have candidates describe projects where they carried out the same type of work. Ask which tools they used, how instructions were given and how quality was checked. A photograph can support a conversation but does not prove who completed the work or whether it meets your specifications. Use a fair sample task Where practical assessment is possible, provide the same instructions, materials and time arrangements to candidates being compared. Have a competent assessor evaluate the agreed criteria. Record the result and any training need rather than assigning a broad label such as “expert in all masonry.” Be realistic about productivity Output depends on access, material supply, preparation, task complexity and quality requirements. Avoid promising a universal daily production figure during recruitment. Discuss the actual project conditions with the candidate. Make offers consistent State location, work hours, pay basis, proposed overtime and benefits before final selection.
